Winter bothies of the Cairngorms
The tour · Cairngorms
Five short winter days between stone bothies, with a fire lit before you arrive.
This is a short winter trip for people who are curious about bothies and not sure about the cold. You need to be able to walk three hours on snow or frozen ground with a pack of about eight kilos. You do not need winter skills. We lend the kit and show you how to use it.
The days are short because the light is. We walk from nine to about two and reach the bothy with the fire already lit. The evening is soup, cards and an early night. Day three goes high only if the weather allows it.
What makes it is the bothy. No power, no signal, one stove and a room that is warm by five. A second guide goes ahead with the food and the wood, so you arrive to a lit window. Bring a book you can read by torch.
