Sandbanks of Baa Atoll
The tour · Baa Atoll
A week between sandbanks by dhoni, manta season in Hanifaru Bay and no shoes at all.
This is a week for swimmers, not only for divers. Hanifaru Bay is snorkel-only by law, so if you can float face down and breathe through a tube you can see everything the trip is built around. Children from ten are welcome with a parent.
The pace is slow and wet. One outing by dhoni most mornings, back for lunch, and the afternoons left open for a hammock or the house reef. Nothing starts before eight except the tide.
What makes it is the season and the stay. From May the plankton gathers in the bay and the mantas follow it in. We stay on a local island in a family guesthouse, not a resort, which is why the price is what it is and why shoulders stay covered in the village. Sari reads the tide tables each evening and picks the hour.
