The Big Sur coast road
The tour · Big Sur
Highway 1 at first light, cliff walks before the crowds and dinner on the beach.
This is a road trip for people who want the coast without the driving. It suits anyone who can walk two hours on a cliff path. There are no long hikes, and you can sit out any walk with a flask and the view.
The pace follows the light, not the map. The whole road is about a hundred and fifty kilometres, and we take eight days over it. We are out early, when the fog sits in the cypress and the turnouts are empty, and off the road by mid afternoon. Three nights are in the same redwood cabins, so you unpack once in the middle.
What makes it is Tomás. He drove this road for work before he guided on it, and he knows which turnouts have no sign and a path. One evening the table is set on the sand, and the van carries the jumpers.

“Tomás stopped the van at a turnout with no sign. Ten minutes later we were watching condors. That was the trip.”
