A reef week in Raja Ampat
The tour · Raja Ampat
Seven days on a wooden phinisi, two dives a day and a marine biologist on board.
This is a dive trip for certified divers with at least twenty logged dives. Some sites have current, and you should be at ease with a drift and a safety stop in blue water. Non-divers are welcome and can snorkel every site but two.
The boat sets the pace. Two dives on most days, one before breakfast and one after lunch, with long hours in between for sleep, books and Sari's talks on deck. Days four and six are lighter, with time ashore.
What makes it is the reef and the person explaining it. Raja Ampat sits in the middle of the Coral Triangle, and one dive here can show two hundred kinds of fish. Sari has studied these reefs since university. You get her fish list on day two. By day eight most people have ticked a hundred and know which ones to leave alone.
